A Vet Practice Specific ‘Wildlife Friendly’ WCB Badge…

 

 

This new badge came about because of a Vet Practice approaching us.

 

They contacted the WCB, to ask if Vet Practices could be WCB Holders.  We replied that we couldn’t regulate Practices, as they were already regulated by the RCVS, but their staff could do the WCB KA, to prove their wildlife knowledge.

 

After further contact with 2, trail blazing RVNs at the Vet Practice, who sparked the whole idea, we created a ‘Vet Specific’ WCB Badge, for Vet Practices to put on their websites: our new ‘Wildlife Friendly Practice' Badge. It's evolved a couple of times, to become more accessible (while still proving the same kind of wildlife friendliness from a Practice)...

 

This WCB Badge is proof of a Vet Practice's commitment to do their best for the wildlife that are brought to them - that they're 'wildlife friendly' - rather than being an assessment that proves that a Vet Practice has 'wildlife experts' working there.  That's why there are 2 ways to get the Badge.

 

To get the 'Wildlife Friendly Practice Badge'...

2 members of Practice staff just have to sit & pass the WCB 'All Species' Knowledge Assessment.  The sitting of the KA can be done in one of two ways, as an exam OR as a training exercise, depending on how the staff member wants to go about it...

They can either:

 

- Sit & pass the KA as a knowledge test (from memory only, with no access to books during the exam).  Some Vet Staff want to do this, to prove, just to themselves, how much they know about wildlife care.

 

- OR...  They can sit & pass the KA while treating it as more of a training exercise, having books like the BSAVA Wildlife Manual to hand, to look up answers they don't know.  (Realistically, we decided that this is what Vet Staff often need to do, however experienced they are, when wildlife are taken into a Practice anyway - looking up specifics in relevant books & online to determine the absolutely correct care of the species in question - so using these resources as part of a training exercise, to get this WCB Badge, makes sense).

[Whichever way a staff member wants to sit & pass the KA, it's still done within a 90mins window].

 

To keep the Vet Practice accredited, the WCB will just check in every 6 months to make sure that at least 2 members of staff at the Practice have sat & passed the KA (perhaps if someone has moved on, another staff member might have chosen to do it, to keep the badge).
